I volunteered my time to help the English teacher and our students use the MakerSpace and Making on a project. The project was titled Read Into Life. The idea behind it was for students to read a dystopian novel and create a visual representation of a scene based on the language and description written and their personal interpretation. Students were provided with a copy of The Maze Runner but they could choose any novel that qualified as dystopian.
The process of helping students through this project was fun and exhausting. I have never read The Maze Runner, so I struggled to help them be sure to complete an example from the book and not the movie. I helped students think through the best way to create their visual and brainstormed ideas with them. I also spent time helping them build and design.
I love the idea of combining our high tech equipment in the Flex Factory (MakerSpace) and art. Students are designing 3D objects in TinkerCad and OnShape for English Class! I love when technology and language arts come together! Overall, this was a really fun project to help out with and I'm so glad I did it! Our school is constantly adding new students and I think through this project they were able to learn how to use some of the equipment in the Flex Factory. I think this project helped to bridge the gap between our students and the idea of Making. Students see the Flex Factory as intimidating or not for them. I think using the space and equipment for this art-sy project helped them see it's not all above their heads! Even though this project was exhausting for me and I felt like I was constantly running around I am so glad I helped out with it!
